Letterman’s Last Stand: Clooney, Oprah, Seinfeld and More to Guest

Tom Waits, Dave Matthews Band and Elvis Costello among musical guests during longtime late night host’s last six weeks

With only six weeks left before David Letterman officially bids farewell to The Late Show, the longtime late night host has revealed some of the big-name guests that will sit on his couch before he retires on May 20th. Jerry Seinfeld, Howard Stern, Oprah Winfrey, George Clooney, Will Ferrell, Tina Fey, Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Hanks are just a few of the stars (and Letterman favorites) that will visit The Late Show one last time.

Bill Murray – Letterman’s first ever Late Show guest and a fixture during the show’s run – will also stop by at some point during Letterman’s closing run. Tom Waits, Dave Matthews Band, Mumford & Sons, Elvis Costello and Emmylou Harris are among the musical guests that will perform at the Ed Sullivan Theatre in the show’s remaining weeks.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the six-week countdown toward Letterman’s final show will begin the week of April 13th with guests Sarah Jessica Parker, Billy Crystal, Masters-winning golfer Jordan Spieth, Michael J. Fox, Alec Baldwin, Iron & Wine and John Mayer. Subsequent weeks will feature Scarlett Johansson, Steve Martin, Julia Roberts, Michael Keaton, Norah Jones, Don Rickles, Paul Rudd, John Travolta, Martin Short and one of Letterman’s trademark longtime guests, zookeeper Jack Hanna.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Letterman’s one-time rival, former Tonight Show host Jay Leno, isn’t among the last six weeks’ roster, nor is Stephen Colbert, the future host of The Late Show. However, CBS promises that more guests will be added as they count down towards Letterman’s grand finale.

Letterman’s final show will take place May 20th, nearly 23 years to the date that the host’s mentor Johnny Carson retired from The Tonight Show. Letterman’s own tenure on late night lasted 33 years, making him the longest-running late night host in television history.
